Procedure Preparation Instructions – Extended Prep with Sutab
Important: Please read these instructions carefully. Failure to follow them may result in a delay or cancellation of your procedure for safety reasons.
General Instructions

Transportation:
You must arrange for a responsible adult (age 18 or older) to drive you home after your procedure.
You will not be permitted to drive yourself. -
Anesthesia Restrictions:
You will receive anesthesia. For the remainder of the day following your procedure, you may not:- Return to work
- Drive or operate machinery
- Sign legal or important documents
- Make significant decisions
- Consume alcohol or recreational drugs

Medications:
Some medications may need to be temporarily discontinued prior to your procedure.- If you take blood thinners, antidiabetic medications, or weight loss medications, specific instructions will be provided during your pre-procedure phone call.
- If you are diabetic and use insulin, dosage adjustments may be required and will be discussed during your pre-procedure phone call.
- Please note that hospital instructions may differ from pharmacy instructions.

Hydration:
Stay well hydrated during and after your bowel preparation. -
Nothing by Mouth (NPO):
After completing your prep on the morning of your procedure, do not consume anything by mouth, including:- Food or liquids
- Ice
- Gum or breath mints
- Chewing tobacco
- Smoking

Arrival Time:
Please arrive 1 hour prior to your scheduled procedure time and check in at the registration desk. Surgical Services staff will escort you afterward.Check-in Time: ________________________

Bowel Preparation Instructions: Sutab with Magnesium Citrate
- Sutab is a prescription medication. Insurance coverage may vary.
Five (5) Days Before Procedure
- Begin a low-residue diet (see attached dietary guidelines).
Two (2) Days Before Procedure
- Follow a clear liquid diet only for the entire day.

Starting at 5:00 p.m.:
- Drink the first bottle of magnesium citrate slowly over 45 minutes.
- Drink three (3) large glasses (8–10 oz each) of clear liquids over the next 2 hours.
- Wait 2 hours after finishing the first bottle.
- Drink the second bottle of magnesium citrate slowly over 45 minutes.
- Drink three (3) additional glasses (8–10 oz each) of clear liquids over the next 2 hours.
One (1) Day Before Procedure
- Continue your clear liquid diet throughout the day.
Evening Before Procedure (Beginning at 5:00 p.m.)
- Open the first bottle of Sutab (12 tablets).
- Take one tablet every 1–2 minutes with at least 16 oz of water, completing all tablets within 20 minutes.
- One hour later: Drink 16 oz of water over 30 minutes.
- Thirty minutes later: Drink another 16 oz of water over 30 minutes.
Day of Procedure (Begin 6 Hours Before Scheduled Time)
- Repeat the same steps using the second bottle of Sutab:
- Take 12 tablets with 16 oz of water.
- Drink two additional 16 oz servings of water, spaced 30 minutes apart.
Additional Important Notes
- You should experience loose stools or mild diarrhea within a few hours of starting your prep.
- Bloating or stomach discomfort may occur before bowel movements begin.
- A successful prep results in clear, yellow liquid stools.
- Do not take any oral medications within 1 hour before starting your prep.
- You may drink additional water during the prep period and are encouraged to do so.
- Do not consume solid foods once your prep begins.
- Do not take anything by mouth after completing your prep.
